The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team suffered a heartbreaking five-set loss last Thursday against New Kent to open the regular season, bouncing back on Tuesday to beat Windsor three sets to one.

In the season road opener against the Trojans, Mathews rallied after losing the first set (25-21) to win the next two (25-23 and 25-20). New Kent regained control in the fourth set (25-17) to force a fifth and final set.

In that set, Mathews trailed, 12-5, and then had a serving run by Mackenzie Moughon to narrow the gap to 12-10. The comeback wasn’t complete, and the Devils ended up falling, 15-11.

Moughon led the team in aces with six, followed by Lindsay Crigler with two. Maddie McCann and Teeny Robbins each had a block. McCann had a team-leading 21 digs, followed by Moughon with 20, Crigler with 18, Rachel Close and Robbins with 15 apiece and Kacie Austin with 11.

Team kill leaders were Moughon with 20, McCann with 10, and Robbins and Austin with four each.
