Lady Devils advance to post-season volleyball play

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team completed its regular season last Thursday, sweeping Middlesex in three straight sets to post a perfect 8-0 Tidewater District record. The team has a 20-3 overall record, with no losses to single-A competitors.

Because of Hurricane Sandy, Tuesday’s district tournament opener was postponed and the entire tournament will be held tonight at Mathews High School. The Lady Devils will face West Point in the first round at 4 p.m. The other semifinal match will feature second-seed King William against #3 Middlesex at approximately 5:30. The championship will immediately follow that match, with the presentation of district honors after.

Regardless of the outcome, Mathews will host the first round of the Region A tournament at 7 p.m. Monday against an as-yet-to-be-determined opponent. If the Lady Devils win, they will host the Region A finals next Wednesday, Nov. 7.

In last week’s regular season finale, the Lady Devils didn’t waste any time proving their dominance over the home-standing Chargers. The Devils took the first set, only allowing the Chargers to get 10 points. That’s as far as the Chargers would get, scoring 10 again in the second set, and just eight points in the third.
