Jayvee Lady Devils close in on perfect season

With one game left this year, the Mathews High School jayvee girls’ basketball team is on the verge of a perfect season. The 16-0 Lady Devils picked up two more impressive victories this past week over West Point and Middlesex.

On Saturday night, Mathews traveled to West Point and defeated the Lady Pointers by a final score of 19-9. On Monday, the Lady Devils routed the visiting Chargers, 39-14.

In the West Point game, while the Mathews offense was stagnant for most of the evening, the Devils’ defense was superb in holding the home team to two first-half points and nine points total. Mathews took a 9-2 halftime lead behind Hunter Thomas’s late second quarter three-pointer. Mathews held the Lady Pointers scoreless in the second and third quarters to preserve the final margin.

Mathews was balanced in its scoring, led by Veronica Cosby and Madison Owens with four points each. Thomas followed close behind with three points; Keely Crittenden, Emily Sorey and Madison South adding two points each. Kenzie Tunstall and Lexie Miles rounded out the scoring with one point apiece.
