Jayvee Devils’ win streak comes to an end
The Mathews High School jayvee girls’ basketball team’s winning streak came to an abrupt halt Saturday as the team lost to the homestanding Northumberland Lady Indians, 29-27.
Coach Tommy Eriksen said, the team played its worst half of basketball this season, coming out flat against and trailing 11-0 in the opening minutes and 21-13 at the half.
Mathews used an aggressive full court press in the third quarter to cut the lead to five entering the final quarter; the Lady Devils forced numerous turnovers and drove the ball consistently to the basket, one for 10 foul shooting proved to be the team’s downfall.
Hannah Rowe, Taylor South and Kai McCann led MHS scoring with eight, six and five points respectively. Also contributing were Bailey Kujawski, Whitney Eriksen and Isabelle Turner with two points each. Jessi Nelson chipped in one point.
Mathews had little time to recover as the Lady Devils faced West Point on Monday in a Tidewater District game that would determine the current first place team for junior varsity. Mathews beat the Lady Pointers in a low-scoring affair, 16-14.
