The Mathews High School jayvee football team lost a close battle last Wednesday to Middlesex, as the visiting Chargers took advantage of a fumble late in the game to score the go-ahead touchdown on the way to an 18-14 victory.

The jayvee Devils played a strong game in its season debut, according to the team’s new head coach, Rob Kincaide. Jonathan Kincaide scored one of the two Mathews touchdowns, gaining 158 yards in the first half.

Michael Cook picked up 98 yards on the ground, scoring the other Devil TD on a perfectly-executed option play. Quarterback Thurman Hudgins passed for 30 yards and rushed for another 48. Defensive players of the game for Mathews were Jason Moughon and Jordan Bozza.

The Blue Devils traveled to Lancaster last night to face the Red Devils. The jayvee squad will be home next Wednesday, Sept. 18 against Northumberland, starting at 6:30 p.m.
