The Mathews High School jayvee volleyball team defeated Essex last Thursday night in the squad’s first regular season game. Mathews played well, winning two quick matches by scores of 25-8 and 25-17. Sabrina Barrack led the team with two kills followed by Josey Bauby and Harley Hayden each with one. Barrack also had six aces, while Bauby had three and Stacy Abernathy contributed two. Olivia Gwynn had three assists while Emily Carmine and Barrack had one each.

On Tuesday, the team traveled to Northumberland for its second match of the season. The intense match went into three games, with Mathews losing to the homestanding Indians. Mathews found itself down, 5-15, in the first game before battling back, only to drop that game, 25-27. The JV Lady Devils reversed the score in the second game to defeat the home team, 27-25. However, Mathews could not keep the momentum and lost the third game, 11-15.
