High school wrestling action: MHS wrestlers 4-2 in dual action

The Mathews High School wrestling team traveled to Lancaster Thursday for a tri-meet with Northumberland and the host Red Devils. Two days later, the Blue Devils traveled to Franklin to compete in the Franklin Duals.

In the tri-meet, the Blue Devils defeated Northumberland, 51-28, and lost a close battle to Lancaster, 35-34. Two MHS wrestlers got their first varsity wins against Northumberland. Tyler Zabel (145 lbs.) came back from a 12-7 deficit to pin his opponent in 5:02, and Thomas Hall (152 lbs.) did the same, rallying from a 6-0 deficit to get a reversal and score a pin in 1:45.

Others winning by pins against Northumberland were Caleb Miller (120 lbs., :21), Isaiah Maultsby (220 lbs., 5:59) and Bill Riley (285 lbs., 1:43). Sean Rhodes won a 15-8 major decision, and Sam Moore (132 lbs.), Billy Bower (170 lbs.) and Austin Fravel (195 lbs.) accepted forfeit wins.

Miller (1:47), Rhodes (3:53), Fravel (4:26) and Riley (5:24) scored pins against Lancaster. Bower earned a 9-1 major decision, while Parker Thompson (138 lbs.) accepted a forfeit.
