The height of summer usually brings good deepwater fishing for flounder and the arrival in good numbers of spot to hook and line fishermen. According to reports, that’s exactly what is happening here.

Jerry Thrash at Queen’s Creek Outfitters, Cobbs Creek, said flounder are biting in the usual hot spots, Buoy 42 and the Cell; also, spadefish are biting at the Cell and Wolf Trap Lighthouse.

Midsize spot are being caught off Gwynn’s Island in the Rappahannock, Thrash said, and croakers are biting while taylor blues are "everywhere in open waters and can be trolled up at 3-5 knots."

Spanish mackerel, a summer delight, can be caught by trolling Clark spoons or small Drone spoons at 6-8 knots in the vicinity of Windmill Point bar south to Wolf Trap Light, while cobia continue to be caught around New Point Light and on York Spit.

The weekly report from the Virginia Marine Resources Commission listed Buoy 18, York Spit and the Inner Middle Grounds as productive for cobia. The report added that while spadefish are available at the Chesapeake Light Tower and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, "It has been the slowest spadefish year since they have become popular. Sheepshead and triggerfish are being caught at the CBBT.
