Gloucester Youth Football opens season against James City, Middlesex
In the first week of Gloucester Youth Football action, the White Knights took on James City while the Red teams faced off against Middlesex. Winners in Saturday’s season openers included the White Juniors and Red Mites, Mighty Mites and Juniors. The Red Midgets tied their Middlesex opponents, 12-12, in double overtime.
The White Juniors shut out James City, 20-0. Leading the way for the Juniors was Martaine Morris, who scored one rushing TD and another on a reception. Walker Atwood added one rushing touchdown, and also threw for the other touchdown. Alec Douglas connected on one of two extra-point kicks. The entire defensive unit was outstanding shutting out the Jaguars. Most spirited cheerleaders were Jaydan Perkins, Madison Monnoyer, Taylor Favazzo and Molly Smith.
The White Mites suffered a heartbreaking loss in double overtime, 26-18. In the White Mites’ game, Trenton Utley scored three touchdowns with 100 yards rushing, followed by Makai Scatliffe and his 60 yards. Offensive lineman of the game was Aiden Robins. The defense held strong most of the day, led by Scatliffe and Ethan (Zippy) Zepernick with 10 tackles each, followed by Utley, Hunter Smith and Alex Vanvraken. Lincoln Phillips was named defensive lineman of the game.
