Gloucester field hockey clinches Peninsula District regular season title
Gloucester High School field hockey players topped an undefeated season and clinched the Peninsula District regular season championship with a 6-0 win over Warwick on a muddy GHS field Tuesday.
"We weren’t expected to take the district title this year but we really came together as a team and they did a great job all season," said Gloucester coach Mike Miller.
Courtnie Green had a hat trick in the win and a pair of assists, Hannah Joyce contributed one goal and an assist, and goals came from Breanna Fox and Tori Harwood. Simone Gayle and Kayla Sadler also assisted scoring shots.
The win came after a busy week for the Dukes who faced Phoebus, Warhill and Menchville last Wednesday through Friday, prevailing in all three contests.
Joyce, a senior, led the 11-0 rout of the visiting Phantoms on Oct. 5 with five goals and a pair of assists, despite playing only about half of the game. "Hannah could score more goals but she’s so unselfish. Instead of taking the shot, she’ll pass it to a teammate. She’s by far the best player in the district this year. She’s a good athlete and a good person," said Miller.
