Gloucester author Doug Williams was chosen recently to produce a book celebrating 100 years of the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School Builders athletic programs.

A 1975 graduate of the apprentice school, Williams said he is "very flattered" he was chosen to gather information and write the book.

As a school focusing on shipbuilding crafts and trades, Williams said there are probably not too many authors among the ranks of its graduates.

The book will be covering all varsity sports that took place at the school dating to the first football game in 1919.

According to Williams, writing the book will include many hours of research in the school’s archives.

He plans to have the book completed by 2017 so it will be ready for the 100th anniversary celebration in 2019.
