GHS to enshrine six in its Hall of Fame

The Gloucester High School athletic department will honor its 2012 Hall of Fame inductees with a public reception at 5:15 p.m. Friday in the Duke Rock Café at GHS. The 2012 inductees are Sam Jackson, Frank Belvin, Valerie Ellis, Meredith Whitley, James Newton and Robert Orth.

The honorees will be inducted during halftime of Friday evening’s football game between GHS and Kecoughtan.

Jackson was a standout football, baseball and track athlete at T.C. Walker High School and was salutatorian of his class. He was voted Most Athletic by his classmates and Best All Around by his teachers. A graduate of Norfolk State University, he attended partially on an athletic/academic scholarship.

Jackson coached at York High School for 39 years and was athletic director for 29 years. His athletes held two state cross country championships, four state track runner-up finishes and over 30 district and regional cross country and track championships. He coached more cross country victories that all but four coaches in state history.

Jackson has received coach of the year honors on the district, regional and state levels and received the Peninsula Sports Club Lifetime Achievement Award. He received state and national level merit of honor awards, and was named the state athletic director of the year.
