GHS softball atop district standings
A 3-2 win over visiting Kecoughtan on Tuesday and a victory over Menchville Friday kept Gloucester High School varsity softball players at the top of Peninsula District standings. The Lady Dukes lead the district with a 12-1 record, followed by Warwick at 11-2. Menchville and Kecoughtan are close behind.
Makayla Jenkins (11-1) pitched a four-hitter to the Warriors Tuesday, giving up two runs, and blasted a solo home run in the fourth inning.
The Dukes took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Devon Smith hit a long drive over the left fielder’s head for a triple. A misplayed relay throw allowed Smith to circle the bases.
The lead was short lived as Allyson Babibsack tripled in two runs to give Kecoughtan a 2-1 lead. Jenkins was able to strand the last runner at third as she recorded a strikeout and a groundout to Alissa Upton. Gloucester tied the score, 2-2, in the fourth when Jenkins’s drive to the left center field fence just eluded the centerfielder for a home run.
Macy Robbins was the catalyst for the Dukes in the sixth when she opened the inning with a single and stole second. She later scored on a Kecoughtan error off a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt from Morgan Haywood.
With the Dukes up 3-2 in the seventh, Jenkins ran into trouble as she gave up a lead-off single and a two-out single to put runners on first and second. However, Haywood’s great play on a popup in foul territory ended the game. Jenkins struck out nine batters while issuing only one walk in the win.
