Two Gloucester High School graduates helped their respective college softball teams get the 2013 season off to a good start.
Kristie Hoeffer led the 13th ranked Rollins College Tars to a six-game sweep in the University of Hawaii-Hilo Invitational last weekend in Hawaii. Hoeffer, hitting third in the lineup, had seven hits, seven RBIs and six runs over the two-day tourney. In game three of the weekend, the Tars got by the hosts, 1-0, when Hoeffer drove in the only run in the first inning.
Chowan University freshman Hannah Joyce, the all-time VHSL leader in runs scored, collected her first collegiate hit Saturday in a 9-1 win over Shaw University. Joyce walked in her initial at-bat and singled in her next turn. The Hawks went 2-2 in the weekend’s four-game set. Joyce tallied four hits over the two days, scored two runs and drove in two runs.
