Grassfield High School soccer players put Gloucester out of the Eastern Regional Girls’ Soccer Tournament Tuesday with a 3-1 win over the Dukes.

The lone Gloucester goal came from freshman Maegan Beck, assisted by freshman Delaney Doyle. Beck’s goal was the last score of the season for a young team that returns all but one player next year.

Gloucester and Woodside battled it out for the Peninsula District tournament championship last Thursday in the Gloucester High School stadium. It took a second overtime period to decide the contest, and the Wolverines emerged the winners, 2-1.

The Dukes, with no losses and only one tie, were the regular season champions and joined the Wolverines in the Eastern Region Tournament on Tuesday at the Old Dominion University Soccer Complex. Woodside was also put out Tuesday with a 5-0 loss to Hickory High School.

Gloucester’s only regular-season tie was in a 1-1 contest with Woodside and the teams were evenly matched again last Thursday in a largely scoreless game. Leah Procopi put the Dukes on the board late in regulation play, but the Wolverines quickly tied it at 1-1 on a free kick. After one scoreless OT period, Woodside struck for the winning goal with less than two minutes remaining in the second OT session.
