GHS girls fall 2-1 in regional quarterfinals
The Gloucester High School varsity girls fell, 2-1, to Woodrow Wilson High School in the Eastern Region Soccer Tournament quarterfinals Tuesday night at the Old Dominion University soccer complex.
Three minutes into the first half, a Wilson defender drilled in a shot from the 35-yard mark. The Dukes later tied it on a corner kick from midfielder Carrie Adams to Delaney Doyle, who sent a shot in front of the net and scored on a deflected ball.
Both teams took several unsuccessful shots in the second half. With less than two minutes remaining, a Wilson player beat the Gloucester defenders and scored the game winner on a fast break. The Dukes took three more shots at the Wilson goal but narrowly missed the net.
The Gloucester girls capped their district play by beating previously undefeated Menchville, 1-0, in the Peninsula District Tournament finale at GHS on Friday.
It was a rematch that the Dukes looked forward to and the highly physical play resulted in yellow cards and injuries on both sides in the scoreless first half. With 10 minutes remaining in the second half, Adams sent a long ball from the sideline to Doyle on a fast breakaway.
