GHS girls edge Monarchs in tournament, 3-2
Gloucester High School varsity softball players got by Menchville, 3-2, on Tuesday to advance to the Peninsula District Tournament championship game. The title game with Kecoughtan was scheduled to be played yesterday at the Stoney Run Athletic Complex in Newport News. Gloucester already has a berth in the Eastern Regional Tournament next week.
The Dukes scored two unearned runs in the first inning with the Monarchs Tuesday at Stoney Run. Morgan Haywood hit a fly ball to right field with two outs that was dropped, allowing Alexis Mielnik to score from first base. Haywood went on to score on an infield single from Devon Smith for a 2-0 lead.
The Monarchs tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth before Gloucester pitcher Makayla Jenkins retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to set up an exciting finish to the game. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Jenkins walked and Haywood doubled to put runners on second and third.
After a force out at the plate, Alyssa Shackleford hit a shallow fly ball between the second baseman and right fielder that was misplayed, allowing Haywood to score the winning run. Jenkins pitched a four-hitter to raise her record to 17-1.
