GHS girls earn regional bid in soccer
The Gloucester High School girls earned a bid to the Eastern Region Soccer Tournament Monday with a 1-0 victory over Kecoughtan in the Peninsula District Tournament semifinals at GHS.
The Dukes will face Menchville, the only team to beat them in the regular season, in the PDT championship game at 5:30 p.m. today at GHS. The regional tournament begins Tuesday.
The Gloucester and Kecoughtan defenses held up through a scoreless first half Monday. With about 15 minutes remaining in the second half, Delaney Doyle took a pass ahead from Mary Williams and dribbled past three Warrior defenders before driving the ball into the net for the game winner.
Kecoughtan fought hard to control the ball and get the tie, but their efforts were shut down by the Dukes’ midfielders and solid defense. Taylor Gamble, Cierra Griffith, Leah Procopi and McKensie Fisher anchored the Gloucester defense and limited the Warriors to six shots on goal.
Last week, Gloucester shut out the Bethel Bruins, 8-0, in the tournament quarterfinals. Williams scored on a cross from Delaney Doyle and the Dukes got first half goals from Lauren Orga, Rachael Peterson and Doyle for a 4-0 advantage at the break.
