The Mathews High School wrestling team finished 18th out of 24 teams at last weekend’s Ram Rumble at Lafayette High School, scoring 62 team points. Mills Godwin won the invitational with 185.5 points; among local teams, Gloucester placed eighth with 136.5 points.

“We didn’t really wrestle poorly, we were just out of our league,” Mathews head coach Tom Holaday said. More than 300 wrestlers participated in the tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Mathews had 10 wrestlers enter, with two placing. Overall, Blue Devil wrestlers won 14 bouts and lost 19.

Winning their first matches and advancing to the quarterfinals were Sam Moore, Parker Thompson, Cody Correll and Austin Fravel.

Only Fravel (195 lbs.) won in the quarterfinals to move on to the semis. There he decisioned Mike Carlin of Nansemond River by two points in a close match. In the semis, he pinned Hampton’s Eric Christie. He lost to a First Colonial opponent in the championship bout to place second.
