Flounder tournament raises $5,700 for Mathews B&G Club
The Mathews Boys & Girls Club’s annual Flounder Fishing Tournament, held on Aug. 13 from Morningstar Marinas, raised more than $5,700 for the organization.
"Beautiful morning weather ideal for fishing saw anglers from all over the state vie for the top spot," said Jonathan Putt, vice president of operations for Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula.
He said tournament winners were determined by aggregate weight of their three largest fish.
"This year’s dramatic weigh-in saw a tie for first place that was broken by the length of the longest flounder caught that day," Putt said. "Hugh Morris beat out Justin Lee by a mere 2¾ inches for the title of top angler."
Tournament winners include: Hugh Morris of Hallieford (first), with a combined weight of 11.08 pounds, $1,000; Justin Lee of Richmond, (second), with a combined weight of 11.08 pounds, $600 and David Dean of Richmond (third), with a combined weight of 11.04 pounds, $500.
