Fishing has been pretty much hit and miss over the past week, according to local bait and tackle shops.

Jerry Thrash of Queens Creek Outfitters at Cobbs Creek, reported on and off flounder fishing over the past week, but said croakers are still available in the Rappahannock River. "Anglers caught croaker to 18 inches along with small gray trout, spot and puppy drum," Thrash said.

He said spot averaging about a half-pound are being caught off Gwynn’s Island, Butlers Hole and the Spike, though patches of red tide are still in the river.

Spanish mackerel and bluefish were found from Windmill Point south to Gwynn’s Island and the Hole-in-the-Wall, but the best mackerel fishing was between MH1 and Wolf Trap Light, Thrash said.

He reported that Hank Ireson of Topping, caught a 3-pound, 2-ounce croaker at the White Stone Bridge.

Hope Jenkins of York River Feed and Fishing Supplies at Gloucester Point, reported that spot have started showing up in the York River and flounder bay wide. She also reported that Jerome Alves of Toano, caught a 56-pound cobia at the Hump.

Finally, J.W. Condrey, weigh master at New Point RV Resort, reported what he called an unusual citation—a 38-pound dolphin fish in the Atlantic Ocean off Norfolk Canyon. He said Cathy Krienen of Mechanicsville, a camper at the resort, decided to venture out to the ocean after poor fishing in the bay, when she landed the fish.

Condrey said nobody has been having much luck with flounders, croakers have been very sparse, and there has been the occasional small spot.

"It’s been a very, very poor year on the western side of the bay," Condrey said.
