Croaker fishing has picked up, at least for those who braved the extremely hot conditions over the past weekend.

Chuck Ashe of York River Feed and Fishing Supplies at Gloucester Point, said anglers should go out and take advantage of the fishing, especially toward the mouth of the York River near the oil refinery.

He said other fish, including Spanish mackerel and cobia, have been biting near the mouth of the river, as well as a few flounder.

Jerry Thrash of Queens Creek Outfitters at Cobbs Creek, reported catches of croaker, white perch and spot over the weekend. "Good-sized croaker and mullet were caught along the channel edge at Buoy 42 by fishermen remaining just outside the commercial gillnets," Thrash said. "The commercials pull their nets about noon to get to market, then recreational fishermen can get onto the schools and into their favorite flounder waters."

Thrash said flounder action at the Cell and Buoy 42 was slow, though a couple of boats reported a limit of fish very early in the morning. There were reports of large numbers of keeper flounder being caught at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, Thrash said.

"Perhaps a second run of flounder is entering the bay," he added. "If so, we should see them mid-bay in a week or so."

Thrash reported the following red drum release citations: 48-incher caught by Tracie Davis of Chesterfield, at Buoy 42 and a 46.5-inch specimen caught by Christopher Rickman of Sandston, at Buoy 42.
