Fishing remained steady over the holiday weekend, according to local bait and tackle shops. Chuck Ashe of York River Feed and Fishing Supplies, Inc., Gloucester Point, said the heat has slowed people down a little bit when it comes to fishing. However, he reported that Alan Hall of Gloucester Point registered a 7-pound, 13-ounce flounder citation.

Meanwhile, Jerry Thrash of Queens Creek Outfitters at Cobbs Creek, reported flounder fishing in the Buoy 42 and Cell areas was slow this week, but some who were willing to put in the time and effort were rewarded with a few keeper fish.

Thrash said there were still no spadefish citations seen yet in the area. "Statewide, this is a very perplexing spadefish year," he said.

Also, according to Thrash, the croaker bite in the Rappahannock River continues and is moving into the bay.  Spot up to three-quarters of a pound are being caught around Cherry Point and the Spike.

"Tailor blues continue to menace schools of menhaden in open waters and can be trolled up as you cruise the bay at 3-5 knots," he added. However, there are still no Spanish mackerel in local waters.

Cobia continue to show at Buoy 13, 16, around New Point Light and on York Spit, Thrash added.
