Fishing has been a mixed bag this past week according to local bait and tackle shops.

Chuck Ashe of York River Feed and Fishing Supplies at Gloucester Point, reported that some flounders and croakers are being caught in the York River. A few spot are showing up, he said, and there have been several cobia bites.

"We hope with the warmer weather, the Spanish mackerel bite will continue to pick up," Ashe said. He reported the strongest showing of those fish near the mouth of the York.

"Overall, if you can get out there, you should be able to catch a few," Ashe said.

Meanwhile, Jerry Thrash of Queens Creek Outfitters at Cobbs Creek, reported that flounder fishing in the Buoy 42 and Cell areas was slow. "Big fish were caught at the high rise and the fourth island of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, but little action north of there," he said. "Rivers and creeks are producing numbers of flounder, but not many keepers."

Thrash said the croaker bite in the Rappahannock continues and spot up to ¾-pound are being caught around Cherry Point and the Spike.

"Taylor blues are busting schools of menhaden in the creeks and in open waters and can be trolled up as you cruise the bay at 3-5 knots," Thrash added.

Finally, he reported that cobias are biting at Buoys 13 and 16, around New Point Lighthouse and on York Spit.
