Duke wrestlers off to a good start

Gloucester High School grapplers got their season off to a good start with a Peninsula District win over Hampton on Nov. 28 and an outstanding performance in the York Duals held Friday and Saturday.

The Dukes beat the Crabbers, 42-27, and Deep Creek, which joined the teams in their dual meet, 52-21. Earning pins against Hampton were Matt Favazzo at 113 in 1:27, Anthony Monahan at 120 in 1:03, Jordan Schall at 132 in 38 seconds, A.J. Ransom at 138 in 1:33 and Steven Zavatski at 195 in 1:10. Decision wins went to Gil Owens at 152 and Levi Reeves at 182 and a forfeit went to Devon Pullen at 170.

Pinning their Deep Creek opponents were Monahan in 1:56, Isaac Chaney at 126 in 1:12, Schall in 5:05, Ransom in 3:27, Pullen in 1:08, Eric Keeter at 182 in 3:43 and Jerry Woodlief at 220 in 1:31. Favazzo and Owens won decisions and Robert Leso at 160 won with a major decision.
