Duke swimmers fail to qualify for state meet; Worland breaks school record

None of the six Gloucester High School swim team members who competed in the Eastern Region Swim Meet last weekend advanced to the state meet, but one did break a GHS record.

Gloucester sophomore Kendall Worland crushed the GHS 500 yard freestyle record of 6:25.20 set in 2003 with her regional meet time of 6:17.19. She was just a second away from setting the new record in the previous week’s district meet.

"Kendall is a very determined swimmer and she was going to beat this record at this meet. She told me right before she got in, ‘I got this coach,’ and boy, did she," said Gloucester swim coach Dawn Clark.

Clark said Worland did not need the usual signals to let her know if she was under, on or over pace to do well. "Kendall didn’t need any reminding she had a perfect 500 swim," Clark said. Worland’s name joined others on the GHS record board at the Riverside Wellness Center, where the Dukes practice.
