Devils’ losing streak comes to an end
Mathews ended their baseball skid at four games by beating King and Queen 12-1 on Tuesday. Before ending the losing streak, Mathews lost to district foe King William and AA opponent and old Tidewater District rival New Kent.
The Devils kicked off district play last Wednesday as they hosted the King William Cavaliers. After a scoreless three innings to begin the game, King William jumped on the Devils scoring four runs in the fourth before adding two more in the fifth and five in the sixth. Multiple errors committed by the Devils helped the cause for the Cavaliers, as five unearned runs crossed the plate aided by seven walks and two hit batters.
Mathews provided no response, as they were blanked through six innings. Down by eleven, the Devils fell to the slaughter rule, losing 11-0 in a shortened, six-inning matchup. Offensive production was dim for Mathews, as they only came up with two base hits, provided by senior Josh Wilson and junior Darian Beale. Ryan Ewell began the game on the mound and allowed two earned runs over four innings while striking out five, unable to contest with his Cavalier counterpart, Daniel McGehee, who threw six shutout innings. Relievers Will Harington and Josh Wilson both allowed a pair of earned runs over an inning of work each.
