Devils drop two in Lancaster tournament

The win streak came to an end for the Mathews High School varsity baseball team, as the boys left Dream Fields in Kilmarnock last week with a pair of losses in the Lancaster High School Tournament.
The Devils headed into the Lancaster tournament with a six-game win streak, but they couldn’t keep the momentum going over spring break, falling to Northumberland, 6-4, last Thursday and to Lancaster by a 5-2 margin Saturday.
The first game’s outcome came as a surprise, since Blue Devils had beaten the Northumberland Indians by scores of 14-4 and 1-0 in their first two matchups. The third time around it was a different story, as the Indians jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
Mathews was able to battle back to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth inning, taking advantage of two walks, a hit by pitch, followed by a two-run single by Paul Burnette and a two-RBI double by Taiwan Forrest. This would be the only offense supplied by the Devils in the game.
Josh Wilson started the game, going 4 and 1/3 innings and only allowed two earned runs. Northumberland scored three unearned runs off Colin Cook in relief to take the win.
