Devils crush Cavs to win tourney
The Mathews High School softball team recaptured the Tidewater District tournament on Friday night with an 18-0 win over King William.
After winning the district’s regular season and tournament titles, Mathews has its sights set on the next level, with the Lady Devils hosting the opening round of the Region A tournament last night.
Mathews was scheduled to face #4 seed Essex at 6 o’clock yesterday in the semifinals. If the Devils win, they will host either Nandua or Windsor on Friday for the Region A title.
In Friday’s district championship game, the stakes were high for both teams—Mathews wanted to clinch the #1 seed in the region, while King William needed a win to get a bid in the Region A tournament.
With a spirited team and crowd, the Lady Cavs’ leadoff hitter was hit by a pitch to reach first base; however, pitcher Lindsay Crigler struck the next two out and threw the third girl out at first base.
All hopes that King William had would be dashed in the next two innings as the Lady Devils leadoff hitter Sharese Jarvis hit a single to left field and Kaitlin Eriksen sacrificed Jarvis around to score giving the Devils the lead, 1-0. After their great start the Devils didn’t stop there as the home team plated six more runs in the second inning
In the bottom of the sixth inning with one out and bases loaded, Jarvis stepped to the plate and drove a shot over the centerfield fence for a grand slam. The homer put the game out of reach as the Devils coasted to the win.
