Deltas win home opener, split series with Pirates
The Deltaville Deltas opened up the 2011 home schedule with a come-from-behind 8-5 victory Saturday night in Deltaville.
Trailing the Peninsula Pirates, 4-1, in the fifth inning, the Deltas (2-1) went on a 7-0 run, scoring in each of their last four innings. Neal Hogge blasted a double to score fellow Gloucester High School alumnus Jimmy Denny to cut the deficit to 4-2 in the fifth, and the Deltas tied the game an inning later on a two-run Kyle Hall single.
Deltaville took the lead in the seventh, plating three runs on four hits, including a go-ahead RBI by Ryan Wiggins.
Keith Parr earned the win while pitching four innings of relief for the Deltas. He allowed just one run on one hit while striking out two. Will Barrack started on the mound, scattered five hits over five innings. He allowed four runs (one earned), while striking out five.
Offensively, Deltaville was led by a three-hit performance by Travis Crump, while Wiggins and Denny each had two-hit nights. Hogge and Hall each led the team with two RBIs apiece.
On Sunday, the Deltas travelled to Williamsburg to take on the Pirates again. A series of defensive errors plagued Deltaville, and six unearned Pirate runs contributed to a 12-4 loss for the Deltas.
The game was tied, 3-3, until the bottom of the sixth inning, where four of the Pirates unearned runs were scored in six-run rally.
