Deltas sweep ’Canes to move to top of standings
The Deltaville Deltas offense scored a combined 21 runs in two games last weekend, as they defeated the Hampton Roads Hurricanes by 10-7 and 11-4.
The wins unseated the Hurricanes (5-3) from atop the Southern Virginia Baseball League standings, and propelled the Deltas (7-2) to the first place.
This Saturday, the Deltas will host the Newport News Cardinals in a 7:30 p.m. game at Deltaville Ballpark. On Sunday, the Deltas will travel to Monfalcone Field to take on the Cardinals at 4 p.m.
Deltas 10, Hurricanes 7
Saturday night in Deltaville was the definition of a back-and-forth struggle, but the Deltas offense, behind three-hit performances of Travis Myers and Alexander Crittenden, fought to come out on top.
Hampton Roads struck first with a two-run homer in the first inning, but Myers drew a two-out walk in the second inning, and scored on a J.C. Moscicki single to cut the lead in half. In the third, Crittenden led off the inning with a single to right, and scored the tying run on a Connor Henderson base hit. Myers then gave the Deltas a 3-2 lead, blasting his first of three doubles to score Jacob Houston.
The Hurricanes responded in the fourth, taking advantage of a two-out error to score three runs, and retake a 5-3 lead. The Deltas responded immediately, with Jarrad Moscicki and Adam Baldwin leading off the next inning with back-to-back hits. Crittenden followed, again tying the game with a two-run single, and then scored to give the Deltas a 6-5 advantage.
