Deltas maintain hold on first place

The Deltaville Deltas took two out of three games in a series against the Peninsula Cardinals last weekend, splitting a Saturday night doubleheader and overcoming an early deficit to win on Sunday.

With the wins, the Deltas improved to 13-3 on the season, and hold a one-and-a-half game lead over second-place York.

This Friday night, the Deltas host the Tappahannock Tides at Deltaville Ballpark on "104.9 WIGO Country Night." WIGO will be giving away tickets to the game all week, and one lucky fan at the game will take home $104.90. The game starts at 7:30.

The Deltas visit Tappahannock on Sunday, in a 5 p.m. game at Essex High School.

Deltas 5, Cardinals 1

Will Barrack dominated the Peninsula batters, and Chris King dominated Peninsula pitching, as the Deltas beat the Cardinals, 5-1, in the opening game of Saturday night’s doubleheader in Deltaville.

Barrack struck out 10 in a complete-game effort, at one point retiring 19 of 20 batters faced. He allowed three hits and walked none, and a seventh inning home run was his only blemish of the evening.

King was the story of the game at the plate. He drove a shot off the right field wall in the fourth inning to give the Deltas the lead. With his team up 4-0 in the sixth, King provided some insurance, lifting a blast over the left field wall for a solo home run.

Cardinals 1, Deltas 0

In Saturday’s nightcap, Smiley Smith had a tough act to follow as starting pitcher after Barrack’s 10 strikeout performance.

How do you follow that? Smith did so by striking out 10 of his own, sitting down 12 of the final 13 batters he faced while scattering six hits over seven innings.

Unfortunately, however, the offensive support did not emerge. A second inning run was all the Cardinals needed, as Peninsula ace Robbie Watkins allowed just four Delta hits.
