The Deltaville Deltas went 1-1 in the opening weekend of the Southern Virginia Baseball League (SVBL) playoff tournament last weekend, defeating the #3 seed York Cannons 12-1 on Saturday night, and falling to the #4 seed Peninsula Cardinals 4-3 in Sunday’s semifinal.

With the results, the Deltas are among three teams to advance to this weekend’s final games. On Saturday, the second-seeded Deltas will take on top-seeded Peninsula Pirates in the losers’ bracket final, to be held at 7 p.m. at Jamestown High School in Williamsburg. The winner will face the Cardinals in Sunday’s 1 p.m. championship at Christopher Newport University’s Captains Park in Newport News.

The team that advances to face the Cardinals will have to defeat them twice to capture the championship.

The Cardinals had defeated the Pirates on Saturday night, 2-0, and the Pirates eliminated the Cannons on Sunday, 7-1.

Michael Taylor’s pitching performance on Saturday night can be summed up in one word: Dominance.

Taylor recorded 13 of his 15 outs via strikeout, allowing a run on a trio of 4th inning singles, as Deltaville routed the Cannons, 12-1.
