Comeback falls short as Indians defeat Devils, 37-33
After getting in a hole early, the Mathews High School varsity football team came back to challenge the Northumberland Indians on Friday night, but the Devils’ comeback fell short at the end, 37-33.
The homestanding Indians jumped out to an early 21-3 lead, but the Devils never stopped playing hard. "By halftime, we made some adjustments defensively and got the score back to 21-11," MHS head coach Paul White said.
Mathews (0-3) took the second-half kickoff and drove down the field to close the gap to 21-19. Dusty Moore blocked a punt in the third quarter and Dayshon Williamson scored his second TD of the night. Deondre Foster also scored on a 71-yard pass from Mathews quarterback Ryan Ewell. Northumberland scored late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
