Blue Devils struggle in preseason scrimmage
The Mathews High School varsity and jayvee football teams got their first taste of game conditions last Thursday against Jamestown. "We made a lot of mistakes, which is not uncommon for a first scrimmage," MHS head coach Paul White said of the contest, which was held at Cooley Field in Williamsburg.
"Jamestown is always a challenging scrimmage," White said of the AA squad from the Bay Rivers District. While this was the first scrimmage for Mathews, it was the second for the host Eagles, and it showed as Jamestown executed better and made fewer mistakes.
"Watching the game DVD," White said, "we were close several times to making the play, but a slow read, poor blocking angle or a missed tackle or assignment gave up a score or a big play."
