The Mathews High School varsity football team picked up its first win of the season on Friday night, shutting out the King and Queen Tigers on the road, 12-0.

The game’s only scores took place in the first and fourth quarters, with A.J. White rushing for a 12-yard TD midway through the opening period and quarterback Ryan Ewell taking it over the goal line on a 9-yard keeper early in the fourth quarter.

White, Deondre Foster and Dayshon Williamson provided much of the Blue Devil offense. White gained 142 yards on 27 carries, had two receptions for 24 yards and a fake punt run for 13 yards. Foster gained 63 yards on six carries and also made two catches for 12 yards. Williamson picked up 61 yards on 16 carries.

Ewell picked up a total of 19 yards on the ground and was 4-of-9 in passing for 36 yards.

"I am very proud of the team for their effort versus King and Queen," MHS head coach Paul White said. "Without question, King and Queen is the most improved team in the district with a solid rushing attack. I believe we held them to less than 50 yards total rushing which is quite a feat with all of their offensive formations.
