After a rough start of the season last Monday against AA Warhill, the Mathews High School varsity soccer team took field in its first home match last Wednesday and got a 3-0 victory over the Northumberland Indians.

Junior Justin Jenkins scored the first goal with a cross from Kelly Nelson. Later in the first half, Glenn Musgrove scored a goal with the help of P.J. Johnson. The final goal was scored in the second half by Musgrove, assisted by Nelson.

The Devils, coached by Craig Raines, start the season with 18 players. Returning players include captains Musgrove and Jacob Johnson, Hans Saunders, Jenkins, Anna Hudgins, P.J. Johnson and Jack Vrooman. New to the squad are Shannon Enders, Amanda Smith, Megan Zeller, Nelson, Adam Wade, Ricky Rutter, Sam Gale, Mason Kent, Zachary Foss, Chandler Brown and Drew Hudgins.

"Right off the kick we had a good start, we had good pressure to win the ball and finish," said Raines. "We have a young team and need to work on coming together. I felt we created lots of chances and had a pretty solid defense."

The Devils travelled to Essex Friday to play the Trojans in what would become a highly competitive game. Neither team was able to get the upper hand and, even after overtime, the game remained scoreless.
