Blue Devil harriers start season strong

The Mathews High School cross country team began its season last Wednesday against Tidewater District opponents King William, West Point and Middlesex. Mathews stole the spotlight as the girls and boys both took home wins at the Devils’ home course at Beaverdam Park.
"The first race of the season is an eye-opening experience for everyone," MHS head coach Drew Greve said. "They have all been working really hard in practice, and it’s fun to watch the hard work pay off with a victory."
The boys posted a distinct win over their opponents with a total score of 21 points, beating King William (48), West Point (80) and Middlesex (80). Kyle Slaughter came in first for the Devils with a time of 19:05 on the 5K course. Close behind were Tucker Blackwell (19:55), Elisha Kane (20:15), Tommy Mayo (20:24), Justin Adams (21:07), Harrison Cullison (22:15) and Sam Jasinski (22:49).
