The Bay Rivers Track Club of Gloucester has had a successful summer, according to coach John Perrin, with a schedule of track and field meets in Newport News, Hampton and Richmond.

The Atlantic Coast Invite opened the Bay Rivers’ summer schedule on June 19 at Todd Stadium. Club members Evan Wagner and Jazmine Banks won their events, with Wagner taking the intermediate girls’ high jump with a leap of five feet. Banks won the young women’s discus with a throw of 85’10.5" and the shot put with a toss of 38’3.5". Natalia Bueker was second in the intermediate high jump, also clearing five feet.

Kevin Speray was second in the intermediate 1500 meter race in 4:30.24 and Da’Rontae Carter was fourth in the intermediate 800 meter run. Haley Lucas was seventh in the young women’s discus with 55’3.5" and eighth in the shot put with 23’.75".

Later in June, the club members competed at the AAU Area 3 National Qualifier at Darling Stadium. Speray was third in the intermediate 3000 race and fifth in the 1500. Cody Davis was 10th in the 1500 and Carter was 13th in the 800. Banks took second place in the shot put and third in the discus and Lucas was seventh in the shot and fifth in the discus. Wagner was second in the high jump and Bueker was fourth. Athletes finishing in the top eight of their events qualified for the AAU Junior Olympics at Norfolk State University next month.

The club members won four events at the Cannonball Cooper Invitational at Varina High School on July 10. Speray won the 1500 race in 4:30.24, with Davis coming in ninth. Bueker won the intermediate long jump with a leap of 15’8", Wagner won the high jump with 4’10" and Banks won the shot put with a throw of 38’10". Bueker was third in the high jump and Carter was third in the 800 meter race.

Perrin said four club members have qualified for the Russell Blunt East Coast Invite this weekend at Duke University and the club is accepting donations to help defray the cost of the trip. Donations can be made to Bay Rivers Track Club, 5081 Haynes Pond Way, Gloucester Va. 23061.
