Mathews places eighth in VHSL Wachovia Cup standings
Mathews High School finished eighth among Group A schools statewide competing for the Wachovia Cup, according to a release from the Virginia High School League.
The Wachovia Cup is awarded to the school in Group A, AA and AAA that achieves the best overall record in VHSL state-level competition in 27 sports.
In Group A, George Mason and Radford tied for first place with 397.5 points. Points are determined based on performance in state championship events. Mathews accumulated 147.5 points to earn eighth place.
In Group AA, Blacksburg won its second straight Wachovia Cup, while Frank W. Cox High School captured its fifth in a row among AAA schools. Gloucester tied for 66th place in the AAA points standings with 22.5 points.
