The Mathews Boys & Girls Club held its seventh annual flounder tournament at Morningstar Marina at Cricket Hill on Saturday and Sunday. The event raised more than $10,000 for the club, according to tournament spokesperson David Fitch.

This year’s two-day tournament was hosted by the Mathews Rotary Club. Cash prizes totaling $4,000 were awarded to the seven heaviest fish caught between Saturday and Sunday, according to Fitch.

Saturday saw 20 boats on the water that brought in 16 fish, Fitch said, while 19 boats went out on Sunday, bringing in seven competition-size flounder.

"Enthusiastic tournament patrons enjoyed two days of beautiful weather, some great fellowship and two phenomenal days of flounder fishing, as well as some mouth-watering pulled pork BBQ and hot dogs on the grill that were provided by the Mathews Wrestling Club," Fitch said.

Results are as follows: first, Carol Tomlinson of Mathews, 7.5 pounds, $1,000; second, Clifton Rowe of Hampton, 6.9 pounds, $800; third, Steve Riss of Hampton, 6.8 pounds, $600; fourth, Scott Clodfelter of Powhatan, 6.2 pounds, 24.75 inches, $400; fifth, Jeffrey Ham of Richmond, 6.2 pounds, 24.25 inches, $300; sixth, Kenny Jarvis of Petersburg, 5.9 pounds, $300, and seventh, Ricky Tomlinson of Mathews, 5.6 pounds, $300.

The youth winner was Nathan Adkins of Amelia, 3.4 pounds, $100. Tomlinson also won the women’s division with 7.5-pounds, winning $100.
