175 runners compete in inaugural GCEF 8K
Eight-year-old Hunter Richardson of Gloucester was among the early finishers in the 8K fundraising race sponsored by the Gloucester County Educational Foundation on Saturday.
The debut event drew 175 runners, with 61 of them signing up Saturday morning to take advantage of the near-perfect running conditions. The course took the runners from Gloucester High School through Ladysmeade subdivision, back up Short Lane into Dunston Hall subdivision and then back down to the finish line at GHS.
The run drew several compliments from participants, who found it well organized with friendly volunteers. Others remarked on the diversity of the participants, which included a sampling of all age groups with seasoned racers, recreational runners and first-time competitors.
At the finish line, Crow was followed by Douglas Marshall of Mathews in 28:48 and Millard Thomas of Manteo, N.C., in 31:14. Connie Glueck of Williamsburg was the first woman to finish and placed eighth overall in 34:08. Emily Webb of Gloucester followed her in 34:26 and Sheri Mann of Yorktown was the third woman and 14th overall in 36:44. Hunter Richardson of Gloucester, the youngest runner in the race at age eight, finished the course 27th overall in 40:44.
