The roof of Donk’s Theater in Hudgins collapsed following a January snowstorm; plans are in the works to rebuild a home for Virginia’s Li’l Ole Opry. In the meantime, the show goes on at the Harry M. Ward Auditorium at Mathews High School.
Bill Geroux’s book “The Mathews Men: Seven Brothers and the War Against Hitler’s U-Boats” came out this year, bringing national attention to the county and the sacrifices made by its seafaring residents during World War II.
The L.M. Callis house (the three-story structure at right) moved down Main Street at the end of 2016. The house was saved from the wrecking ball by a group formed to save the old home, Preservation Mathews, and the house will see new life as a bed and breakfast.
February’s third annual Thomas Hunter Middle School Founder’s Day program honored the school’s musical legacy, and, in particular, the contributions of retired music teachers Rosalind Knight and David Shuber. Here, Shuber’s wife, Ginger, at left, gives Knight a hug after the program. This year’s program, titled “Welcome to Our House,” will be held on Feb. 6.
The Mathews High School girls’ tennis doubles duo of Ashley Hudgins and Morgan Johnson earned the title of Group 1A state champions in 2016. The MHS tennis team ended the season as state runners-up. Automated External Defibrillators began popping up in public places throughout Mathews County in 2016, thanks to an initiative spearheaded by the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad.
