Hakeem I. Blake received a bachelor of arts degree in political science from Christopher Newport University during commencement ceremonies May 11. A 2008 graduate of Mathews High School, Blake is the son of Imazel and Angela Blake and the grandson of JoAnn Blacken, all of Cardinal.

Shelley Brown of Gloucester was named to the spring semester dean’s list at Bridgewater College where she is a rising junior majoring in biology and chemistry. The recognition requires a 3.4 or higher grade point average.

Kedron Walsh of Mathews and Patrick Murphy of Gloucester received the Outstanding Student Award for the junior class during the 2013 Underclassmen Awards Ceremony at Christchurch School. Walsh also received the Spanish Language Award.

Melissa Hansen of Gloucester, was inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda (ASL) at Mary Baldwin College. ASL is a national honor society for nontraditional adult students and requires a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Abigail Daugherty Hylton is the valedictorian for the Walsingham Academy Class of 2013. Walsingham will hold its annual commencement at 11 a.m. Saturday at the school. Hylton, the daughter of Richard and Sarah Hylton of Gloucester, will attend the University of Virginia.

Peter James Teagle of Gloucester, graduated from Hampton Roads Academy in Newport News, on May 25. Teagle will attend Hampton-Sydney College on a Dean’s Scholarship, to study English, history and economics. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David P. Teagle, and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. David H. Teagle and Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Ketchum, all of Gloucester.

Sharon Bishop of Hayes recently received a master of science degree in nursing from the University of Cincinnati.

John Brewington, fine arts coordinator for public schools in the City of Virginia Beach, has been named one of three recipients nationwide of the Educational Theatre Association’s National Administrator’s Award. He was cited for his dedication, knowledge, energy and insight. The award will be presented in June during the 2013 International Thespian Festival at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Brewington is the son of Mathews County native and part-time resident John Brewington of Virginia Beach.
