Two local students took part in the Hampton Roads Regional Spelling Bee held at Fort Monroe on March 30.

Sponsored by Adult Literacy on the Middle Peninsula, Inc., Jeffrey Cho of Gloucester was eliminated on the word "mootable" while Alison Hughes of Mathews went out on "jovial."

The students were two of 28 participants in the bee. The contest was won in the 10th round by Kirtan Patel of Lindsay Middle School, Hampton, who spelled "filament" correctly. Patel advances to the Scripps National Spelling Bee to be held in late May in Washington, D.C.
