The Gloucester High School NJROTC unit staff for the upcoming school year participated in training July 20-23 at Milford Haven Coast Guard Station in Mathews. The cadets deployed with coast guardsmen during search and rescue evolutions, boardings and other training exercises.
Physical fitness was also part of the training, with daily early morning sessions that included one-and-a-half and three-mile runs. One training session had cadets don life vests and fire signal flares while floating in the water.
When the cadets were not in training or observing Coast Guard procedures, they spent time at the Riverside Convalescent Center in Mathews playing bingo and visiting with the residents. The cadets also spent several hours planning corps activities for the 2010-11 school session, including the Freshmen Week that begins Aug. 18. During that week, the corps staff will help rising freshman cadets prepare for the year ahead.
The corps will be led this fall by cadet commanding officer Deana Nutter and cadet executive officer Jesse Pearsall.
