Juan Cruz graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in psychology from George Mason University during commencement ceremonies May 21. Cruz also completed minor studies in English and spent his spring 2010 semester studying in the Oxford Honors Program at Oxford University in England. He is a 2007 graduate of Gloucester High School.
Mary DeForge graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in liberal studies elementary education from Longwood University during commencement ceremonies May 14. DeForge also completed minor studies in children’s literature. She is the daughter of Kathleen and Douglas DeForge of Mathews.
Alexandra "Allie" Procopi of Gloucester, received a bachelor of science degree in environmental science from Christopher Newport University during commencement ceremonies held May 15. Procopi will enter a master’s degree program at CNU in the fall.
Amanda Duhon graduated cum laude with a liberal arts degree in sociology from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., during commencement ceremonies May 14. At Macalester, Duhon was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and inducted into Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society. She is the daughter of David Duhon and Cindy Gebhard of Bohannon.
Alyssa Ward received a bachelor of arts degree in social work from Christopher Newport University during commencement ceremonies May 15. She is the daughter of Don and Cadella Forrest of Mathews, and Marvin Washington of Gloucester.
Amanda Anne Faulkner received an associate of arts and sciences degree and a certificate in general education from Rappahannock Community College during commencement ceremonies May 13. Faulkner will pursue a degree in dental hygiene at Thomas Nelson Community College in the fall. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Faulkner of Mathews.
Lindsey Long received a master of arts degree in school psychology from East Carolina University during commencement ceremonies May 7. She is the daughter of Bill and Kristina Long of Mathews.
Christine Cathleen Poteet graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in health and physical education from Virginia Commonwealth University during commencement ceremonies May 21. Poteet’s studies focused on teacher education preparation. She is the daughter of Cathy and Bill Nelson of Mathews.
Brandon Williams of Gloucester, has been named to the spring semester dean’s list at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas. The recognition requires a grade point average between 3.5 and 3.99.
Ashley Williams of Moon, has been awarded a full tuition scholarship to attend Bryant & Stratton College Online through the school’s Pay It Forward Scholarship program. Williams received a second full-tuition scholarship to "pay it forward" to someone else. Williams was one of five winners nationally.
Deana Nutter, the daughter of Mark and Pam Unwin of Gloucester, has been selected as a finalist for Virginia’s 31st annual Homecoming Queen, to be held June 18 and 19 at the Holiday Inn, Roanoke. A senior at GHS, she was the school’s homecoming queen. Virginia’s 2011 Homecoming Queen will receive a cash scholarship, plus an all-expense paid trip to the national finals in California.
