Mathews High School will hold an Advanced Placement parent/student information session at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, in the MHS media center, according to school counselor Renee Johnson.
The purpose of the session is to provide students and parents with additional information, including the benefits and challenges of the AP program and details on the testing process.
All students planning to take an AP course next year are expected to attend this meeting along with a parent or guardian.
In a related matter, MHS juniors planning to apply to college next year need to make sure they register for the SAT test before the end of the school year. Remaining test dates are May 7 and June 4.
Registration for the SAT may be done online at www.collegeboard.com. The cost for the exam is now $47. Students who receive free or reduced lunch are eligible for two fee waivers. These waivers can be obtained in the school counseling office.
The MHS counseling office, in cooperation with Horizons Education Programs, is offering a SAT improvement course for the May 7 test, beginning on Monday, April 11. The six-session, 15-hour course will be held at MHS on Mondays (April 11, 25 and May 2) and Wednesdays (April 13, 27 and May 4) from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
Tuition for the class is $150. If the student attends all classes without tardiness and completes all homework assignments, the parents will receive a $50 rebate.
Space is limited to the first 20 students who register and make payment.
