Cal Hones of Gloucester, has qualified to compete in the state finals of the National Geographic Bee scheduled for April 1 at Shenandoah University in Winchester.

Hones, 11, won the Tri-Cities Home Educators’ Geography Bee in January and joined other public, private and home-schooled winners in taking a written exam. Cal earned his state bid by scoring among the top 100 students in Virginia on the geography test.

State winners earn a trip to Washington, D.C., for the National Bee where the top three finalists are awarded college scholarships. Cal is home-schooled and is the son of Sara Hones.
