The Mathews High School Scholastic Bowl team’s recent streak of success continued at Saturday’s Region A Tournament, where the Devils overcame numerous obstacles to place second and earn a berth in the Group A State Tournament.
Due to a seeding error, the Devils faced Tri-Rivers District regular season champ Windsor in the opening round. Trailing after a rocky first round, Mathews put together a solid team round to take a 35-point lead with one round to play. However, Windsor rallied to tie the score on the final question of the match and went on to win on the first extra question in the sudden-death tiebreaker round.
Facing elimination, the Devils handily defeated district rival Middlesex and Northern Neck foe Rappahannock to set up a rematch with Windsor with a state tournament berth on the line.
The Dukes took control early and amassed a seemingly insurmountable 55-point lead late in the team round. On the brink of elimination, the Devils used a late surge in the team round to trim the deficit to 15. The Devils then outscored Windsor, 90-20, in the final tossup round on the way to a 205-150 victory.
